Making Safety a Top Priority
Emphasis on training was one of the main priorities for Costa
Logistics in 2009 with the company conducting its first "Safety
Leadership and Culture" training sessions in Melbourne and Sydney
in November. The training was conducted by an external
training consultancy with salaried employees from the around the
country flying in to Melbourne and Sydney to attend the training
program.
The courses provided training to 37 senior staff members to help
them fully understand their leadership role and obligations under
workplace safety legislations. In addition, applying tools and
techniques for safety leadership and hone their skills in a "safe"
learning environment. The training was even attended by the
company's General Manger of Operations and National Operations
Manager.
Employees that attended the courses were supervisors and
management leaders directly related to the company's operations
division from both Costa Logistics and Polar Fresh. Feedback
from employees was positive with staff reporting that they gained a
greater awareness about their role in leadership and how they can
in turn influence the safety culture and attitudes in a positive
way.
Costa Logistics' CEO Tim Bolam said that the training courses were
the company's way of investing in its employees to equip them with
the relevant skills needed to bring Costa Logistics' "Zero Harm"
safety values back to the teams at the various distribution centres
nationally.
With safety being top of mind for the company, Costa Logistics
will continue to deliver internal training programs to senior
managers in 2010 to better assist them in improving their roles and
accountabilities within the organisation in the areas of safety and
risk assessment.
